Mutamba Mineral Sands
Project Start: August 2022
Project Completion: April 2024
Project Key Metric: 4,500m3 concrete, 170 tons steel
Location: Jangamo, Inhambane Province, Mozambique
Project Type/Name: MMS 120 ton per hour pilot plant for Mineral Sands mining
Scope of Work:
Bulk earthworks to mining plant platforms, roads, civil works, SMPP and all in-country support to the EPCM contractor.
Interesting or Unusual Challenges Faced:
The project site is situated in an area characterised by exceptionally poor soil conditions. To address this challenge, extensive layer works, and platform stabilisation necessitated the use of a carefully calibrated blend of imported materials. To overcome this challenge required us to procure and transport materials that precisely met project specifications from a great distance away, which put the schedule and budget under pressure, but nevertheless was successful.
Montepuez Ruby Mining (Phase One)
Project Start: August 2016
Project Completion: December 2016
Project Key Metric: 500m3 concrete & 200 tons steel
Location: Cabo Delgado Province, Mozambique
Project Type/Name: MRM treatment plant 1 & DMS
Scope of Work:
A remote greenfield site in Northern Mozambique upon which a new 100 ton per hour ruby wash-plant and density medium separator was to be installed and commissioned. This required extensive earth works, civil works, SMPP installation and all in-country support to the EPCM contractor.
Interesting or Unusual Challenges Faced:
The project was constrained by an exceptionally tight schedule of just 5 months, further compounded by the necessity to operate within the confines of an active Ruby plant boasting stringent security protocols. Meeting the tough deadline required extraordinary efforts, with management investing extensive hours and production teams operating double shifts to ensure timely completion and commissioning. Despite these challenges, we successfully delivered the project on schedule, marking a significant milestone for Montepuez Ruby Mining with the successful commissioning of the plant.
Montepuez Ruby Mining (Phase 2)
Project Start: September 2017
Project Completion: January 2019
Project Key Metric: 1,700m3 concrete & 450 tons steel
Location: Cabo Delgado Province, Mozambique
Project Type/Name: MRM recovery, sort house & personnel control centre
Scope of work:
Another remote greenfield site which required earthworks, civil works, building works including high quality finishes, as well as SMPP installation. All in-country support to the EPCM contractor was also part of the scope.
Interesting or Unusual Challenges Faced:
This project was a first of its kind for the coloured gemstone industry, and consisted of a four-storey, hi-tech, modular ruby recovery plant, placed atop a state-of-the-art sorting facility with an all-encompassing security infrastructure to control personnel access. Because of the relatively small footprint, extensive concrete and formwork was required for the foundations and superstructure, to carry the heavy static loads. This required the setup of on-site concrete batching facilities, with strict quality control measures to avoid any potential failures. RadX’s focus on upfront planning and quality, ensured that zero structural concrete failures were reported on any of the project’s numerous pours.
